With C, programmers could write code for large, complex programs that would remain comprehensible, flexible, and portable to various platforms, but still compile to be almost as fast as if they had be handcrafted in assembly. Unix and C became the environment and the benchmark for computer programmers and scientists from the 1960s onwards.
